The two disciplines, (architecture and interior design) are connected and different at the same time. Although both are working to build functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces, they are very different in terms of role, approach and area of expertise. Explaining these differences can help to clarify the respective role that these forms of knowledge are contributing to the built environment.
Focus of Work
In architecture, primary focus is given on the structure and functionality of a building as a whole. The external framework is designed from an architectural perspective to be structurally sound, appealing and in accordance with the building codes. The walls, windows and doors are all the part of their work which begins right from the foundation till the roof. They deal with technical issues including materials, energy efficiency, ventilation and lighting.
On the other hand, interior design focuses on the improvement of the interior spaces within this framework. Aesthetics, usability, human experience is what interior designers concern. Furnishings, color schemes, lights and decorative items are curated to relate to the purpose of the space. They want to create certain moods and enhance comfort while retaining functionality.
Training and Expertise
Both, engineering principles and artistic design are major areas of training of architects. They are able to work on complex projects whose structural integrity, safety regulations and innovative designs they learned to take care of through their education themselves. They can be considered professional and most of the times, they are involved in big projects such as the residential complexes, commercial buildings, or public infrastructure.
Spatial, colour and texture planning, interior furnishing design and furniture design. They are experts in making interior harmony that is based on human psychology and emotional responses. Though they can work with architects in the planning stages, their purpose is finished space design.
Scope of Responsibilities
Architects are the people who conceptually imagine, plan, and administer the entire construction process of constructing building from start to end. They work with engineers and contractors to bring together the structure’s form and function by way of detailed blueprints.
Usually, the interior designers come into a project after the structure is done. They transform raw interiors into a workable and beautiful space suitable for the need it is intended for. They do not usually make structural changes but may propose changes to improve the interior layouts.
Timeline of Involvement
Architects are involved in a project from inception. Structural requirements and the general layout of the building are laid down by them and they form the basis of the building’s design. They keep working throughout construction to make sure that their plans are complied with.
Included in the job of interior designers are those that come in after or during construction and focus on finishing touches. The material, furnishings, and decor are chosen by them that are in consonance with the client’s vision but superseding the architectural framework.
Interdependence Between Disciplines
Though they differ, at the same time, the relationship between architecture and interior design is very tight. A successful building, both structurally and for interior, comes together. Interior designers give life to the space by focusing on detail that affects our experience of it. Architects give the space its form and function, the skeleton.
